The Russian philosopher Vladimir Solovyov wrote of the necessary duality of a cherished object. We are fascinated, enchanted by the idea, the being or the essence of the object, but we also love its physical existence, its objective correspondence, the personification of the idea. Humans are thus made: we are conscious beings, capable of thinking and learning, but we are also flesh and blood, driven by a passion for beauty and all that is worthy of our affection.
